Amazon launches Twitch-like clip-sharing for original Prime Video series

One of the most popular Twitch features is making its way into another Amazon product.

Amazon announced Thursday that a new clip-sharing feature is rolling out on Prime Video for iOS. Once you’ve cut out a clip you like, you can send it to your friends via Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, and iMessage, similar to the way shareable clips are made on Twitch.

There are, of course, a couple of big caveats to this. The first is that it’s only available on iOS right now. The second is that you can only create clips from a small selection of original Amazon shows, like The Boys and Invincible. Amazon declined to comment about Android availability and support for clip-sharing from a wider selection of shows and movies.

As for the actual process of making and sharing a clip, it’s pretty self-explanatory. Simply tap the “Share a clip” button in the lower right corner of the screen while watching one of the supported programs. You’ll be able to cut a snippet of your choice, up to 30 seconds long, before a share menu featuring the aforementioned apps pops up. Hit send, and hope your friends like what you shared.

This is fascinating in the sense that many streaming services like HBO Max will produce a black screen if you try to take a screenshot of what you’re watching, as a mean-spirited anti-piracy measure. Amazon leaning into content sharing sets it apart from other streaming services, though the restrictions might not make it all that useful for a lot of folks. You better hope your friends really like Invincible.
