California man suspected of sexual assault on child flees, crashes into train

A Colton man accused of sexually assaulting a child was apprehended Thursday, April 8, in Riverside after a brief pursuit that ended in his car colliding with a train, the Colton Police Department said.

On Monday, April 5, 34-year-old Jesus Valencia Cruz was identified as a suspect in a sexual assault on a child. Colton detectives were able to obtain a warrant for Cruz’s arrest on suspicion of lewd acts involving a child, police said.

At about 4 p.m. Thursday, detectives located Cruz parked in his car in Riverside and attempted to contact him before he fled, police said. As Cruz fled, he failed to slow down for a passing train at the intersection of Marlborough and Chicago avenues and struck the train, disabling his car on the tracks.

Riverside Fire Department personnel responded and were able to remove Cruz from the car and transported him to a local hospital, prior to his booking, police said.

The train later stopped in Yorba Linda for an inspection. No injuries were reported to anybody on board, according to Officer Ryan Railsback with the Riverside Police Department, who assisted with the collision investigation.

Anyone with information into this incident is encouraged to contact Detective Jamie Ramirez at 909-370-5021.
