VOTE: Southern California Girls Athlete of the Week, April 9

Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Click on the newspaper links below the athlete’s name to read about their performance from last week, and then vote for who you think deserves the top honor.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at midnight, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to vote processing.

Claire Streeter, San Marino: Streeter tossed a no-hitter and struck out 10 in a 3-1 win over La Canada in a much-anticipated Rio Hondo League showdown between two of the best softball teams in the area. The Spartans’ only run was unearned. San Marino improved to 3-0.

Ryann Orange, Torrance: Orange allowed one hit in six innings and struck out 12 in a 7-0 win over St. Paul. Last week, she didn’t allow a hit in four innings and she struck out seven in an 11-0 win over St. Joseph. She also had two RBIs in the win.

Hailey Sanchez, Gahr: She went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and belted a two-run home run to help the Gladiators defeat La Mirada 8-6 in a nonleague game. Her home run ended up being the difference in the game. Two days earlier Gahr had failed to hold an eight-run lead and lost 13-12 when La Mirada scored nine times in the seventh.

Naomi Johnson, Roosevelt: In last week’s meet against Upland, Johnson won the 100-meter dash in a wind-legal (+1.3 m/s) 12.23 seconds, the fastest time in the state this season. Johnson also turned in the state’s No. 3 time in the 200 meters, winning in 25.22 seconds despite running into a headwind (-1.3 m/s). Johnson also helped the Mustangs win the 4×100 relay in 48.89 seconds, the No. 4 time in the state this season.

Sydney Somerndike, Villa Park: The Arizona commit fired her first perfect game in an 8-0 victory against JSerra and followed the performance by throwing a five-inning no-hitter in a 10-0 win against Aliso Niguel. Somerndike (5-0) struck out 18 against JSerra and 12 against Aliso Niguel to raise her season total to 67 in 28 innings. She also is hitting .384.

Alyssa Thompson, Harvard-Westlake: Thompson has scored four goals in each of her last two matches and has totaled 13 goals in five matches this season. Thompson has spearheaded an offense that’s outscored its opponents 25-1 in the season’s first five matches. Thompson faces perhaps her toughest matchup so far on Wednesday when Harvard-Westlake hosts unbeaten Chaminade, last year’s CIF Southern Section Division 3 champion.
